Year 2 Meet the Teacher

What a busy start to the term for Year 2!  Children have settled really well into their new year group and routines; they’ve really hit the ground running!

In English, we’ve been exploring the traditional tale ‘Rapunzel’, comparing this with Beth Woollvin’s version.  Year 2 have been comparing the two Rapunzel characters and writing from their point of view.  Our grammar focus has been suffixes, and how they change the meaning of root words.  Our maths learning has started with place value.  Our budding mathematicians have been writing numbers in words (up to 100), flexibly partition 2-digit numbers and estimating numbers on a number line.

Our Great Fire of London history topic has sparked great curiosity as children discover the causes of the fire, how it spread so easily, some important people who lived at the time and how the fire changed London.

In Christianity RE topic, our driving questions has been ‘is it possible to be kind to everyone all the time?’.  We’ve been finding out stories and messages from the bible, where Jesus was kind to people, even when it was difficult.  Children have been reflecting on their own experiences, thinking about ‘when is it easy to be kind?’, ‘when is it tricky to be kind?’ and ‘what does it mean to be kind?’.

Our class has been finding out what animals need to survive in science, and we’ve discovered that although mammals have the same four basic needs, they meet them in very different ways.  We’ve been delighted by the knowledge that children have shared in our discussions and the enthusiasm they display for the subject.

Our artist study this term is Vincent Van Gogh.  Year 2 have been analysing his most famous works: various sunflower studies, Starry Night and Café Terrace at Night.  Children have been using pastels and paints to re-create Van Gogh’s technique.  We’ve also spotted several references to Starry Night in various books!  Our study of impressionist artists has continued in computing where children have been creating their own impressionist-style landscapes using the pointillism technique.  Our Creating Pictures topic has enabled children to produced their own digital landscapes, experimenting with tone, saturation and colour.

In PE, Year 2 have been developing their ball skills, specifically different types of throw and ball control – working on both technique and accuracy.

We’re so proud of Year 2 and children are super excited to take part in this year’s Nativity with the Reception class and Year 1 – we know they’ll do a super job!
