At Manland, we use the National Curriculum for PE together with Chris Quigley skills to teach children how to achieve optimum physical and emotional development, as well as good health. Opportunities are built into the curriculum to ensure that children exercise and keep fit. PE lessons are taught weekly and pupils are also encouraged to partake in the daily mile initiative. In addition, all of our Year 3 children have swimming lessons at the Harpenden Leisure centre. PE lessons focus on skills which are built on both within lessons, and as children progress through the school. Lessons build on children’s prior knowledge, skills and understanding. Children therefore, feel safe and supported with their PE skills, and view PE as a rewarding and challenging subject. We use specialist teachers to support the school within our lessons, for example, the “Chance to Shine” cricket association who have worked with us to develop staff and pupil’s skills. Our PE clubs offer a wide range of sports to our pupils and we have an incredibly high take up with the clubs we offer. At Manland, our children experience a wide range of sporting competitions with other local schools. Competitions both within and outside school are planned for, so a wide range of children have the opportunity to engage in competitive sport and activities across the year groups. Football matches, netball matches and tag rugby tournaments have allowed our pupils to develop teamwork and leadership skills and understand the importance of fairness within competition. Results are then celebrate in various class and whole school assemblies.
